Take a "tour" of the Senior Center under "Photo Gallery." ARM CHAIR EXERCISES – These exercises are part of the activities in our new "Fitness Fun Hour." The "Fitness Fun Hour" is held in the Woodlands Room between 9:00-10:00 am on Monday through Friday. Exercise includes a 20-minute workout of stretching and strengthening motions. This is a gentle workout, to improve strength, coordination and flexibility, all done while sitting in an armchair. We have additional easy exercises and activities each morning, like beach ball toss. It's a fun hour. Always check with your physician before you begin an exercise program.
BINGO is held at 1:00 pm on the first Wednesday of the month and usually the third Friday of the month. (Please check the monthly calendar for exact date.) Transportation is provided to Friday activities, but we need your request for transportation at least a week in advance. Bingo is played at The Gathering Place, at 501 Nation Avenue, Eaton. BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING - Screening is available at the Senior Center on Fridays between 11:00 am and 12:00 noon. BOCCE BALL- We are able to set up a Bocce Ball court on the Senior Center lawn upon request. This is a fun outdoor sport. BOWLING - Bowling takes place a Richmond 40 Bowl, Richmond, Indiana, on the first Thursday of each month. A stop is made for lunch, on your own, usually after the bowling. Transportation is provided using 10-passenger vans. Call for reservations. BRIDGE - Bridge is played at the Senior Center on Tuesday and Thursday at 12:30 p.m. Please call Bob Bourne, Bridge Coordinator, at 456-3392 for more information or to register. Bridge Tournaments are held on a regular basis throughout the year. CANTEEN - We always have a jigsaw puzzle going and we also have chess, checkers and other board games available. Tables and chairs are set up in the Canteen for you to use while drinking a cup of coffee, eating a snack, etc. CARRY-IN OR “FOR PURCHASE” MEALS – Most months we either have a carry-in lunch (you bring a covered dish) or a special "for purchase" meal (where we provide table service, beverages and the main dish), at a small charge. On some occasions, we have a complimentary meal with a special event or activity. These meals are now held at The Gathering Place at 501 Nation Avenue, Eaton. The Gathering Place, which is complete with kitchen, enables us to have larger attendance at our functions without crowding the seating and tables. CARDS- Widowed Persons of Preble County meet on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm in the Woodlands Room to play cards. The group meets at 1:00 p.m. each Wednesday year round. You are invited to play cards with the group even if you are not a widow or widower. Everyone is welcome. CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP MEETING - The regular meeting of the Caregiver Support Group is in the Woodlands Room at the Senior Center on the first Monday of each month at 2:00 pm. If you are a caregiver, we invite you to attend these monthly support meetings. Call Juanita Moore at the Senior Center at 456-4947 for more information. CHAIR VOLLEYBALL - This fun activity is usually held at 1:30 pm on the third and fourth Thursday of each month (please check the monthly calendar). We meet other Chair Volleyball Teams for tournaments a couple times a year. We usually have six or more players on a team. Two teams compete by hitting a beach ball over the net back and forth to each other. It is a fun time for everyone. The games are played at The Gathering Place, 501 Nation, Eaton. Everyone is invited to join us to watch or to play chair volleyball. COATS FOR SENIORS - We take donations of coats during the fall and winter months for our "Coats for Seniors" program. If you need a warm winter coat, please stop in the Senior Center. We usually have a nice selection of men and women's coats in assorted styles and sizes (available November through March). COMPUTER ROOM - We have two Dell on-line computers (with large screen monitors) available for your use in the Senior Center Library. Microsoft Office 2000 enables you to type letters, do reports, etc. With Internet access, you are able to visit your favorite websites and send and receive emails. We also have a Videophone for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. We offer computer classes on a regular basis.
DANCES - We have several dances a year, with a disc jockey or live band. See complete information on "Coming Events" section of website. Our annual "Old-Time Saturday Night Barn Dance" is held in the fall. There is no charge to attend the Barn Dance and all ages are welcome. We have a "Senior Prom" in May each year. DIABETES SUPPORT GROUP- The support group meeting is held at 2:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month. A Certified Diabetes Educator from Wayne Hospital in Greenville, Ohio conducts the meetings. A different topic is discussed each month with the focus on helping people live a healthier life with diabetes. See "Community Resources" section of this website for a schedule of topics to be presented at the Diabetes Support Group Meetings in 2010.
FITNESS FUN HOUR - Join us in the Senior Center Woodlands Room from 9:00-10:00 am each weekday morning (Monday through Friday) for an hour of fun gentle exercises. If you have questions, please call Mary Jane at the Senior Center at 937 456-4947. Always check with your physician before you begin an exercise program. FITNESS ROOM - We have three commercial treadmills, stationary bicycles, a step machine and other equipment. The equipment is available on a first-come, first-served basis. (Note: always check with your physician before you begin an exercise program.) We have a TV/VCR to keep you company while you exercise. FISHING- We travel to Lakengren and other lakes in the area on the first Tuesday of the month (April through October) for a few hours of fishing. You will need to bring your fishing pole, tackle box, bait, sack lunch, etc. The group will fish near the lodge, where restrooms and picnic tables are available. Transportation is provided using the Senior Center’s 10-passenger vans. Call for reservations. FRIDAY ACTIVITIES - Regularly scheduled events are held each Friday, including "Friday at the Movies," Bingo games, themed lunches like "Soups On," and our monthly Carry-In or For Purchase Lunch. Check the newsletter calendar each month for the location of Friday activities. Most Friday activities are now held at The Gathering Place, 501 Nation, Eaton. Transportation is provided to Friday activities for those who do not drive. Please request transportation one week in advance. Call the Senior Center at 456-4947. GOLF – Do you like to play golf? If so, you might be interested in joining us next year on a monthly mini-trip to Penn-Terra in Lewisburg. Call the Senior Center for details. KINSHIP KONNECTION - This is a support group for grandparents raising grandchildren. The meetings are held at 10:00 am on the second Friday of each month. HORSESHOES – Use our horseshoes or bring your own. We have three horseshoe pitching courts available during the spring, summer, and fall months for you to use anytime Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
LEGAL AID– Free legal assistance is available from Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. This service is for Preble County residents who are age 60 and older. At this time, appiontments are not available with Legal Aid. LIBRARY - Our library has many hardback and paperback books available for you to read. We rotate the books as new ones are donated. We also have audio books and VHS movies available for check out. You can sit at the picture window in the library, and watch the many different kinds of birds at the bird feeders just outside. We always appreciate donations of new or slightly used books. LINE DANCING - The Line Dancers, with instructors Ken and Donna Smith, meet at The Gathering Place, 501 Nation Avenue, Eaton, on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 p.m., followed by Clogging with Debbie Smith at 7:30 p.m. "MAKE AND TAKE" CRAFTS - We make fun and easy crafts on a regular basis. You complete the craft in one to two hours. Check the newsletter calendar for dates and times. There is usually a small fee for materials. Reservations are required. MINI-TRIPS- We have regularly scheduled mini-trips using our 10-passenger vans. These trips are for persons who are unable to travel on a motorcoach trip. The day is shorter and less strenuous. We also visit museums, historical locations, theaters, farm markets, antique malls, unique shops, and many other area attractions. Call for a schedule of mini-trips.Give the Senior Center a call if you would like to be picked up at your home. Other type Mini-trips include FISHING on the first Tuesday of the month, BOWLING on the first Thursday of the month, and WAL-MART on the second Thursday of the month.
PAINTING CLASSES - Painting classes are held at the Senior Center on a regular basis, or upon request when there is enough interest. QUILTING CHICKS - This group of ladies meet at The Gathering Place, 501 Nation Avenue, Eaton, at 10:00 am on Thursday afternoons. They would like to have more individuals attend their meetings. If you like to quilt, or would like to learn to quilt, you are welcome to join them. Bring your sewing machines. SPECIAL EVENTS – Special activities and events are held throughout the year. These include everything from barn dances, to picnics at Ft. St. Clair Park, to speakers on a variety of topics, to nature walks on the Senior Center grounds, and much more. Watch for details in your monthly calendar and in the Senior Scene Newsletter. SQUARE DANCING - We have no square dancing classes scheduled at this time. Check future postings. SEWING takes place in the Craft Room at the Senior Center on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. The ladies who sew, crochet, knit, quilt, embroider or do needlepoint, have selected the name "Silver Threads & Golden Needles." They are a talented group. They also work on projects for the Holiday Craft Bazaar throughout the year. TAX ASSISTANCE - Each year AARP volunteers offer free income tax assistance to seniors. TRIAD COUNCIL PROGRAM - If you have any questions regarding the TRIAD program, please email Sheriff Simpson at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or give Sheriff Simpson a call at 456-6262, or call the Council on Aging at (937) 456-4947. (We appreciate donations of used cell phones for the program.) WALKING. - Walking is available anytime on the Senior Center grounds (depending upon weather conditions). We have designated walking trails on the grounds. There are benches along the trail for your comfort. It is a lovely walk any time of the day. WIDOWED PERSONS OF PREBLE COUNTY- This group meets at the Senior Center to play card games each Wednesday at 1:00 pm. You are invited to join the group on Wednesday, even if you are not a widow or widower. Everyone is welcome and you are never a stranger. If you are newly widowed, we would like to help you get back in the "stream of life" by having you attend our informal get togethers for talk, eating out, etc. Please call the Senior Center at 456-4947 for more information. We look forward to hearing from you. WII GAME SYSTEM- Nintendo Wii Games are available. We are set up for the games at The Gathering Place, 501 Nation Avenue, Eaton. You have probably heard about "Wii" - now is the time to try it out. The game system includes golf, tennis, boxing, baseball (and more games), and of course, our favorite - bowling! It is easy to use, great exercise and a fun way to spend active time with friends. Call the Senior Center staff if you would like to play the Wii Games and we will get it set up for you. YOGA CLASS - This is a new activity at the Senior Center, available upon request. It is also sometimes part of the daily "Fun Fitness Hour" that is held each morning between 9:00-10:00 am in the Senior Center Woodlands Room. "You are always welcome at the Senior Center.
